A6. numbering and identification of the horses, the behavioral vices

Individual identification of the horses:

- Phenotype description : coat colors, long/ short hair, body, mane, tail

- Special marks : head, legs, not changeable marks, spots, hair whirls, scars

- Brandings : breed specific marks, on neck & croup (the rump or hindquarters)

- Number of hoof, tattooing (upper lip inside)

- Brand marking: to denote ownership or identify a specific breed. The mark is made with a hot iron on the actual hide, permanent.

- Normally there is only one brand, but- For example the lipizzaners have four brands- stud, ancestral, foal, traditional.

- Chestnut print, for (skin proliferations above knees)

- Polymorphic systems- blood groups, DNA fingerprints, other DNA allelic polymorphism (VNTR- variable number      tandem repeat, STR= single tandem repeats, microsatellites, DNA- profils)

Can be identified by:

Markings = like a star, stripe, blaze, snip, white face etc.

Socks, stocking, pastern,

Coat color, Tattoos, Freeze or fire branding,

Microchips !

Iris scanning: more accurate than a finger print

DNA testing: individual identification, parentage verification etc

the Behavioral vices: -

Unwanted behavior of the horse such as Cribbing, biting, weaving, windsucking, separation anxiety from other horses, rearing.

Cribbing may cause the following changes in your horse: increase stomach acidity, decrease saliva production, slower digestive passage, ulcers.

Weaving: side to side movement of the horse’s neck & weight. Can be caused by stress.

Rearing is a normal play behavior in a herd, but can be dangerous in the presence of people

Also - Head shaking, wood chewing
