Mesencephalon : mid brain

- located between pons and diencephalon

- is made of tectum mesencephali + pedunculus cerebri

Tectum mesencephali

- the root of midbrain, covers aqueductus mecencephali

- consist of colliculus caudalis + colliculus rostralis

colliculus caudalis

- responsible for auditory pathway

- signal from medial geniculate nuclei of thalamus which generates reflexive response to stimuli

colliculus rostralis

- responsible for vision pathway

- signal from lateral geniculate nuclei of thalamus

- reflexive response involving eye movement


pedunculus cerebri

- consist of crura cerebri & tegmentum mesencephali

crura (ventral) cerebri

- 2 crus separated by fossa interpeduncularis

- have pyramidal and pontine tracts, between telencephali and caudal brain system

tegmentum mesencephali(dorsal)

- separated from crura cerebri by substantia nigra(coordination of pyramidal tract, regulates movement)

- comprise core of mid brain

- have nccl. oculomotorius Ⅲ, nccl. parasymphatico, n. oculomotorius , nccl. trochealis, nucl. protectalis, nucl. interpeduncularis


Diencephalon

- part of procephalon(Diencephalon + telencephalone)

- consist of epithalamus, thalamus, hypothalamus

epthalamus : most dorsal part, comprise pineal gland, habenular

- pineal gland : endocrine gland, secretes melatonin

- habenular : receive fiber from hippocampus send fiber to mesencephalon

Thalamus : lateral wall of 3 ventricle, largest part of Diencephalon

- dorsal thalamus : a lot of nuclei

- subthalamus : rostral continuation of tegmentum mesencephali

- contains subthalamic nuclei which act as relay situation?

- metthalamus : comprises the medial and lateral geniculate body

Hypothalamus

- forms floor of ventricle

- it comprise of optic chiasma, tuber cinereum, mamillary body(receive info from hippocampus send to thalamus, important for memory.
